STABAT MATER

Debuted in June 2019 - CCSP - São Paulo | 110 minutes

Text, direction and performance: Janaina Leite

Synopsis

The show is part of a broader research by Janaina Leite on the real in the theater - now in the light of the obscene. Based on the theoretical text Stabat Mater (in Latin, there was the mother), by the philosopher and psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva, the artist and researcher proposes the format of a performance-lecture on the feminine, going back to the story of the Virgin Mary, at the same time. who tries to account for the erasure of her mother in her previous play, Conversations with My Father. Accompanied by her own mother and the figure of Priapus, a character for whom a porn actor was sought, she radically articulates historically irreconcilable themes such as motherhood and sexuality. With terror and pornography as aesthetic bases, Leite investigates the origins of a historical arrangement between the feminine and the masculine, which the work tries to disarm without first taking risks and facing the mechanisms of jouissance and pain that fix these positions.

"What matters is that everything I have been doing since then is the attempt to produce something, a kind of psychomagic act - a real action that produces symbolic consequences or a symbolic action that produces real consequences, but that returns each one of these figures to for the time being, it is enough to say that it was not without surprise that, as I walked back through the minotáuric labyrinth that was the process of Conversations with My Father, I realized this kind of flawed act. of this incestuous tragedy where father and daughter starred, absolutes, albeit denied, foreclosed, “the mother was there”

Reviews:

"The risky procedure of self-examination, a kind of vivisection, displaces the imaginary and social places of women, crossed by ideals of motherhood, sanctity and selflessness. Disguise and unmasking, theatricality and performance, the staged and the real, indiscernible, they are procedures that aim at desecration, which for Giorgio Agamben is the “political task of the coming generation”.

Silvia Fernandes, researcher and critic, Sala Preta Magazine

“In the play“ Stabat Mater ”, playing until 11/12, Janaína Leite takes it one step further and stages, alongside her own mother, her encounter with the enigma of sex. Self-fiction that goes to the limit, taken to the stage with boldness, reveals that the fright in the encounter with sex does not refer to the act itself - banal and mechanical as pornography only proves -, but to the recognition of the absolute otherness of the desire of the other. How each of us enjoys is an enigma that goes with us to the grave together with the “cine privé” of our badly concealed erotic fantasies. ”

Vera Iaconelli, Psychoanalyst, writer and columnist, “The encounter with sex, column in Folha de SP of 11/26/2019

"What we want to highlight here in the staging, which, moreover, comes from a very authorial text, is the clash that the author proposes, systematically, patiently and generously between reality and representation. From simple extremes, such as the most potent effect of the false slap in the face, the epistemological ones, such as the intangible real, or the inextinguishable trauma, there is an honest and diligent effort to expose the story of a vertical exploration about the being and the opinion of the truth. Yes, perhaps this is no longer the theater in many senses, but it is subversive mainly because even without any personal or artistic modesty, it manages to represent the unrepresentable that it challenges. "

Luis Fernando Ramos, critic and theatrical researcher, Revista Sala Preta | Vol.19 | n.2 | 2019

Stabat Mater establishes itself as a scenic event of extreme relevance due to the way it articulates form and content. Starting from a mythology that establishes an immaculate conception as a kind of model impossible to be followed, that links femininity and motherhood to the absence of unconscious desires, Leite chooses to wake up - and perhaps wake up his mother - from this night where he does not dream . Thus, his performative lecture takes on the disturbing tones of the nightmare as legitimate drives of life, albeit terrible.

Amilton de Azevedo - critic - Portal Ruína Acesa

The proposal to create an explicit sex scene between Janaina and a porn actor endorses Stabat Mater's evident affiliation with Angélica Liddell's theater. As in the creations of the Catalan multi-artist, male violence against women emerges as a theme and the performance form invites the actress to expose the body to extreme situations. At first, the proposition aims at a subversion of two axes: the rape victim, the body previously pleaded, will now be in control. And the mother, always silent, will be urged to shock, to move.
